DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH

This research study about how neighborhood change impacts community perceptions and access to local resources. This research focuses on how residents choose to travel within and around their neighborhood. You have been asked to participate because you are a member of a community experiencing gentrification. This study will include residents of similar neighborhoods in New York.

WHAT WILL MY PARTICIPATION INVOLVE?

If you decide to participate in this research you will be asked to wear a GPS enabled device as you travel through your daily activities for a period of 5 days. You will be provided with a GPS monitor or you have the option of downloading an application to your mobile device that will act as a GPS monitor. These will capture the geographic location of the stops you make during the day and the time required to travel between locations.

Your participation will last approximately 5 days in total. The destinations you visit and the routes you take are entirely up to you during this period. For your participation you will be paid $40.00 at the completion of the tracking period.

Your participation is voluntary throughout the 5–day period. During this period, you must, to the best of your ability, keep the GPS device activated and on your person. You may voluntarily stop participation at any time during the 5-days. If at any point you voluntarily de-active, remove, or turn-off the GPS monitor and/or GPS tracking application, you must contact the Researcher or Primary Investigator and withdraw from the study. If GPS tracking is disrupted due to non-voluntary reasons (i.e. lack of service, device malfunction, etc.), you are not required to withdraw from the study.

Once the 5-day tracking period is completed, you may de-activate and/or remove the application from your mobile device. If you used a GPS device provided by the Researcher, you must return the device at the end of the 5-day period. Payment is contingent on completing 5 full days of tracking.

A follow-up set of interviews will be conducted with a sub-group of participants. You can indicate your willingness to participate in interviews at the bottom of this consent form. However, participation in this portion of the study does not require you to participate in an interview.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS TO ME?

There are minimal risks to you for participating in this research. These risks are related to confidentiality due to the use of GPS data. GPS data risk identifying the participant based on patterns of movement and locations.

ARE THERE ANY BENEFITS TO ME?

There are no direct benefits to you for participating in this study.

COMPENSATION

Participants will be paid $40.00 for your completed participation in this study. All 5 days of tracking must be completed for compensation; if participation is withdrawn prior to the 5-day period of tracking, no compensation will be provided.

HOW WILL MY CONFIDENTIALITY BE PROTECTED?

Your geographic location data will be available to the research team. If you choose to use your mobile device for GPS tracking, the location data will also be accessible to the private application developer and distributer of the application.

Route-specific GPS data is entirely determined by you. You have the option of visiting only public locations you feel comfortable associating yourself with. While this research study may result in publications, your name and specific personal identifiers will not be used; only group characteristics will be published. To avoid identification, specific dates and time related to geographic locations will be removed directly after collection. Information linking you to your GPS-device will be kept in a password protected document separate from the route-specific data.

WHOM SHOULD I CONTACT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS?
